This one is still stuck in the land of the two-dimensional panorama, so the whole concept of being hunted by animals is tossed out the window. Who's kidding who(m)?īrowning is among the last of the first generation hunting games. Problem is, it just isn't Browning African Safari. Given that I just finished off Deer Hunter II, I also envisioned the game set in a 3D environment. If you miss and the animal lunges at you, chances are you will get mauled. With Browning African Safari, however, I envisioned a game where the animals fight back. As exciting as watching my dog lick its crotch. If you miss in Deer Hunter II, you yawn, stretch, wonder if there's anything good on TV now. If you miss in Quake, chances are you will die. What's missing is the action of a game like Quake. As has been mentioned by others far wiser than myself, the biggest problem with hunting games is that they are so damn passive. Without looking too much into the game I thought that, finally, this would be a cool hunting game. Whether exploring the Pacific Northwest or treading through the depths of a Transylvanian forest, fans of virtual hunting should be impressed.Browning African Safari comes billed as "Who's hunting who?" (not to nickpick or anything, but shouldn't that be "Who's hunting whom?"). Other unique elements include a trophy system, changing weather conditions, an interesting narrative, and extremely realistic natural environments. While this platform is classified as a hunting SIM - akin to Hunting Unlimited - the gameplay is much more immersive. A unique heads-up display will highlight factors - such as which organs were pierced, how fast the projectile was traveling, and the overall distance between the hunter and the prey. Furthermore, every kill shot is analyzed. Users can access a host of weapons, and each of these is associated with specific benefits as well as drawbacks. Similar to real-life scenarios, issues - such as how a species behaves and downwind locations - play important roles. Players will also have to remain quite observant if they wish to take down an animal. Note that the game's FPS rates may drop on occasion. Instead, it places a significant amount of focus on how ethics are involved. Way of the Hunter is not necessarily a shoot-'em-up platform in terms of actions that players can take.
